Hong Kong's stranglehold on the
international races in Singapore continued at Kranji here today when
SOUTHERN LEGEND romped to a three-length victory in the S$1.5mil Kranji
Mile.
For good measure, Hong Kong's other runner HORSE OF
FORTUNE came in second.
The 1600m weight-for-age contest
was open to international entries for the first time this year. The other
foreign entry, New Zealand's entry OCEAN EMPEROR, finished eighth.
Hong Kong's entries have won the last three runnings of
the Singapore Airlines International Cup
—
MILITARY ATTACK (2013) and DAN EXCEL (2014 and 2015
— and the last three staging of the
KrisFlyer International Sprint
—
LUCKY NINE (2013 and 2014) and AEROVELOCITY (2015).
"He’s
a versatile horse who can handle any type of going and obviously any
direction as well, as we saw tonight (they go the other way in Hong Kong),"
said trainer Caspar Fownes.
"I’m
very happy for the connections because I had to convince the owner (Boniface
Ho Ka Kui) to come here. I told him horses travel good these days, it’s a
lot easier, just like for us, humans."
SOUTHERN LEGEND won four races in
Australia including the listed Darby Munro Stakes at Rosehill before going
over to Hong Kong where he has picked up four more wins.
But his best effort in Hong Kong
was his third to BEAUTY GENERATION in the Group 1 Champions Mile in his last
start just last month.
Based on that effort, punters sent him off the
favourite in the Kranji Mile today and he duly
obliged with Zac Purton in the saddle.
