Promising Melbourne apprentice Ben
Thompson marked his first visit to Singapore by winning the Group 2
S$500,000 EW Barker Trophy (1400m) astride MISTER YEOH at Kranji here
tonight.
This is the first feature win for the 21-year-old lad who has some 290 wins
to his name since making his debut in 2014.
Earlier in the evening, Thompson finished second on MO ALMIGHTY in the Group
3 Saas Fee Stakes (1200m) which was won by odds-on favourite BOLD THRUSTER,
marking his fourth win in six starts.
MISTER YEOH, unplaced in one run each at two and three, made an instant
impact in Singapore with a debut win last March and two runs later, captured
the Group 2 Three-Year-Old Classic over 1400m.
He was unplaced in the Group 1 Lion City Cup in May but has since chalked up
two wins and two placings in as many runs since.
He finished second to ARAMCO in the Group 3 Garden City Trophy three weeks
ago and stepped up a gear to claim the EW Barker Trophy tonight.
MISTER YEOH won by half a length from ZAC KASA, giving trainer Cliff Brown a
1-2 finish.
"I’m
pinching myself," Thompson said after the win. "I’m glad I’ve made the most
of the opportunity. I’ve been riding for five and a half years, I just came
out of my apprenticeship, it’s been a whirlwind journey."
