Whirlwind blows another win

WHIRLWIND, who ended a run of four consecutive second placing to win in Class 4 last month, followed that up with a runaway win in the Enrich Stakes A - 1600m event here today.

Ridden by apprentice Wong Kam Chong, the four-year-old was travelling so well behind the pace early that he took over the running at the 1000m.

WHIRLWIND was challenged on the inside and outside at the top of the straight and barely held on as he started to drift out. Wong had a hard time to keep him on a straight course as the gelding drifted out further and further.

WHIRLWIND eventually ended on the outside rails but still won by 3-1/4 lengths. He also survived a protest by the second-placed Q NINE MAGIC. It was his third win in 13 starts.

Wong became the top rider in Malaysia for the first time last year with 49 wins, dislodging Jose De Souza who had been on top in the previous three seasons. He had started the new season with a double, after scoring on SUPER DRAGON in a later event.

De Souza, though, won the first race of 2018 when he scored on DUE HOME. It was the eight-year-old's ninth win in 67 starts.
