Apprentice Akmazani makes dream debut

Apprentice M Akmazani made a dream start to his riding career when he booted home TILSWORTH JACOBI to win the Open Maiden event over 1200m in his first ride at Sungei Besi here today.

And the lad, indentured to Frank Maynard, nearly made it a double but was beaten a neck on TOM KING in the very next race.

TILSWORTH JACOBI, placed once in five previous starts, was among the first to break but was travelling so well that Akmazani took him to the front after travelling 300m.

Akmazani rode the English gelding hands and heels the rest of the way and the five-year-old easily held off the second favourite MOONSHINE MISTRESS to win by 3/4 length. TILSWORTH JACOBI paid RM92.

TOM KING hit the front close home in the Class 3 - 1200m handicap but was caught near the line by stablemate DESIRE SKY who was racing for the first time after a change of name from COMMANDO ECLIPSE.

The New Zealand gelding won three races in the space of five runs in late 2017 and early last year but struggled to win in the last 13 months. The change of name has brought a change of fortune.
