YULONG EDITION defied a double promotion to spring an upset in the Class 2 - 1600m handicap at Kranji here today.

The Irish gelding had won his last start in Class 4 over the same distance on the polytrack.

In meeting much stronger opposition today, YULONG EDITION enjoyed a big drop in weight from 56.5kg to 50kg and took advantage of the light impost to lead all the way to win by half a length. He paid $79.

It was his third win in eight runs in Singapore since coming over from England where he started seven times at three for two wins and two placings, winning over 1609m and 2011m.

It was a bittersweet success for trainer Mark Walker as his other runner in the race, SACRED CROIX, started odds-on but managed only sixth after being the rear most of the way.

"He was supposed to run in a Class 3 mile race, but it was scrapped as there were not enough entries. So, he got into this race by default," said Walker who took over the horse after Shane Baertschiger saddled him four times for a win. "I’m not sure what next. Let’s take it one race at a time."

Winning jockey Juan Paul van der Merwe went on to score on LONHRO GOLD, marking his first double in Singapore.
