A chance ride
landed apprentice Khaw Choon Kit the biggest win of his career.
Jockey Wong Kam Chong, who was indisposed prior to the last race here
yesterday, was stood down from all his rides today. And Khaw picked up the
ride on SACRED EMPIRE in the Coronation Cup (1600m).
SACRED EMPIRE, winner of three races in three seasons in New Zealand, was
unplaced in six starts in Singapore.
Since coming to Malaysia, the More Than Ready gelding has shown consistency
but found one to beat five times this year before breaking through two
starts back in September.
SACRED EMPIRE had his first big test in the Piala Emas Sultan Selangor the
same month, finishing a creditable fifth.
Khaw rode an incredible race on the seven-year-old. The pair settled well
off the pace in the heavy going. He was still well off the pace and racing
on the inside of horses at the 400m.
ELECTRIC KING set a sizzling pace in the adverse track conditions and was
still well clear at the 200m. But the challengers soon came after him.
MR NEVERMIND, then SACRED EMPIRE who worked his way slowly and gradually
towards the leader. KING WIN also joined in the hunt.
As soon as MR NEVERMIND headed ELECTRIC KING, SACRED EMPIRE ranged alongside
him and hit the front. BLACK THORN charged home late to finish a neck behind
SACRED EMPIRE.
