Fame Star shines the brightest

FAME STAR continued his phenomenal rise through the ranks to capture the S$400,000 EW Barker Trophy at Kranji here tonight.

The American gelding finished fourth in his debut in April last year and in 15 starts since, has finished out of the money just once.

Even then, just three months ago, the four-year-old was still racing, and winning, in Class 4. Then came a double in Class 3 and another success in Class 2 followed in quick succession.

FAME STAR was facing his first big test, coming up against a host of group and top-class winner winners headed by MISTER YEOH.

FAME STAR quickly took command from the start, as he did in his last four consecutive wins, with MISTER YEOH in pursuit. The latter's challenge fizzled out in the straight.

FAME STAR, under vigorous riding by Marc Lerner, fought hard to hold to his lead. GRAND KOONTA made a vain bid in the closing stages but the former held on to win by a head.

"It was my first time riding Fame Star, but of course, I know what he’s done here, even if this was his biggest test," said Lerner who was handed a one-calendar month suspension prior to the race.

The French jockey had presented himself to the clerk of scale and completed the weighing out process without wearing a body protector which is a compulsory piece of riding equipment.

FAME STAR, purchased for US$39,000 as a two-year-old, has now won seven times from 16starts and earned around S$542,000.
