Comeback galloper Hatta wins Sprint Trophy

Penang Sprint Trophy
 

The remarkable comeback of HATTA hit a new high when he easily won the RM250,000 Penang Sprint Trophy here today.

Few would have thought the son of Charge Forward could have reached such having been sidelined for 16 months earlier in his career.

Costing a modest A$20,000 as a yearling, HATTA won once in Restricted Maiden from five starts in Singapore in 2016.

The gelding then missed the whole of 2017 during which he was transferred to Malaysia in June of that year. A few months later in November, he had a change of trainer and came under the care of Frank Maynard.

Known for his knack of nursing "sick" horses back to health, Maynard soon worked his magic on HATTA.

HATTA won his second outing for Maynard and went on to complete a hat-trick in Class 4 and a Metro A set-weight event.

HATTA had his first crack at a big race, in the Sprint Trophy last year, finishing fourth to runaway winner MR NEVERMIND.

Rested for another six months after that, HATTA won his seasonal debut in Class 3 back in February. He then finished third to VOLCANIC GENERAL in the Tunku Gold Cup and never a factor in the Perak Gold Vase over the 1100m straight course.

Jackson Low, riding HATTA for the second time (following the Gold Vase), was well off the pace early but enjoyed a run on the rails from the 800m to the home bend.

At the top of the straight, Low eased the gelding out behind the heels of TANNHAUSER and STAR GENIUS and quickly went after TANNHAUSER who had kicked clear.

HATTA raced to the front 150m out and went on to win by two lengths, with STAR GENIUS taking second spot, a head in front of TANNHAUSER.
