Thompson off the mark with Black Jade

Consistent in England, BLACK JADE finally broke through for his maiden win in Singapore when he upset the card in the Kranji Stakes C event over 1400m at Kranji here tonight, and gave newly-licensed Ben Thompson a first win for the year.

Irish-bred BLACK JADE was placed all his four runs at two and had two wins and three placings in seven starts at three.

But in six previous starts at Kranji, he managed just one second placing and meant punters largely ignored him in the betting tonight.

BLACK JADE started at $153 and unlike his previous outings, was parked third most of the way before snatching victory by half a length.

"He’s a tricky horse. He doesn’t like to be in a closed space, even in the barriers, he is claustrophobic, he gets worked up,” said trainer James Peters. "But he was nice and relaxed tonight."

Thompson came to Singapore last November for a short visit, winning the Group 2 EW Barker Trophy (1400m) for his first career Group win on MISTER YEOH.
