Champion apprentice Khaw on a roll

Apprentice Khaw Choon Kit, who ended 2018 with a 'bang', winning five races in the final weekend, was off to a flying start in the new season when he booted home a late double astride WHITE CHIN and RAINBIOW NATION in the opening day here today.

The five winners at Penang last week enabled Khaw to top the apprentice table for the first time with 43 wins and finished fifth over all, a superb effort by a lad who started riding in 2016. 

After being placed in his first two starts in Malaysia following his transfer from Singapore, WHITE CHIN was sent out even-money favourite in a Class 4 - 1000m handicap.

Although he was inclined to drift in from the 250m, the Irish gelding was too good for his rivals, winning 3 1/2 lengths.

WHITE CHIN was two races as a juvenile in England but was unplaced in five runs at Kranji before moving on to join Frank Maynard.

RAINBOW NATION, a A$640,000 yearling purchase by his owners China Horse Club, won two races in Australia, had three trials in Singapore but never started a race at Kranji.

He finally broke through with a hard-fought win in his ninth start today under Maynard following two earlier placings.
