Unplaced in the Queensland Derby 13 months ago in his final outing in Australia, SUN MARSHAL (late Han Xin) made up for it in style to capture the Singapore version which is for four-year-olds over 1800m at Kranji here today.

The son of Sepoy has been consistent since arriving in Singapore, with two wins and three placings in six starts but he still started at long odds ($120) in the Singapore Group 1 event, the final leg of the Four-Year-Old Challenge.

His record prior to his arrival in Singapore wasn't bad either, finishing on board in eight of 10 runs in two seasons in Australia, winning twice including one over 2000m at Caulfield.

But what stood out was his second-place finish in the Group 3 Doomben Grand Prix and a third in the listed Ladbrokes Galilee Series Final.

But SUN MARSHAL, ridden by Joseph Azzopardi, defied the odds to win by a neck from stablemate MR CLINT who has been placed just once since winning the Singapore Guineas in May last year.

For Perth rider Azzopardi, it's a milestone in his career. "It feels unbelievable. I’ve just won my first Derby and my first Group 1 all in one hit," he said.

For trainer Lee Freedman, who has 11 other Derby trophies in his cabinet when training Down Under, it's his biggest win since coming to Singapore in 2017.
