After one second and a third from
three rides on Friday, Victorian jockey Patrick Moloney was off the mark in
his one-month stint when he partnered DIAMOND RING to a runaway in the
Restricted Maiden event over 1200m on the polytrack at Kranji here today.
The Super Easy gelding, making his racing debut, was installed odds-on
favourite against seven rivals.
After initially racing just in front on the outside of MASTER SOMMELIER, the
three-year-old kicked clear at the top if the straight and went to the line
five lengths ahead of the rest.
"It’s
nice to be on board after I didn’t have much luck with a couple of placings
on Friday," said Moloney who began his apprenticeship with his father
Gerard in 2012 and has ridden more than 400 winners.
"He was very green. I wanted to get to the fence but I couldn’t. I was happy
to just let him travel where he felt confident and happy. He wanted to lug
out, but he put it away quite well in the end." DIAMOND RING was bought for
A$170,000 as a yearling.
Moloney was twice crowned champion country apprentice jockey in Victoria in
2015/16 and 2016/17, and in the latter season claimed the metropolitan title
as well.
His haul of 10 stakes wins include the 2015 Alister Clarke Stakes with CHILL
PARTY (his first Group success), the 2017 Queen Elizabeth Stakes with
VENGEUR MASQUE and the 2017 Linlithgow Stakes with RICH CHARM.
