Callan Murray gets early win on Ganassi

It has not taken South African jockey Callan Murray long to open his Singapore accounts.

After drawing a blank in four rides on Friday evening, the 22-year-old partnered GANASSI to an all-the-way win in his third ride of the afternoon in the Open Maiden - 1200m event at Kranj here today.

The Snitzel gelding had faded to finish last (of 11) in his debut after chasing the front-runner in a similar event a month ago.

Hence, he started at long odds ($148) but this time, there is no holding him back. GANASSI set the pace and held his advantage to win by 1 1/2 lengths.

"I’m really happy I’ve got a winner on the board," said Murray who last rode in Hong Kong. "I didn’t ride this horse in trackwork, but I saw his Polytrack trial was pretty good."

 

Murray had a meteoric rise through the ranks since making his debut in 2013. He finished second on the apprentice jockey's table in the 2014/15 season before clinching both the South African and Zimbabwean titles the following season. He rode 370 winners including a Group 1.

 

Murray has also ridden winners in Australia and has two stints in Hong Kong where he clinched two Group 3 races. He is licensed by the Singapore Turf Club till the end of the current season.

 

GANASSI was purchased by how owners for A$160,000 as a yearling and raced for two seasons Down Under for five placings in 10 outings.
