New trainer Jason Ong made a dream debut at Kranji here
tonight when his first runner, the aptly-named SOTHISTHEONE, battled his way
to a narrow win in the Secret Win 2017 Stakes, an open maiden event over
1400m.
The dream start to his career came just a week after obtaining his licence
and five days after he took over the stables vacated by his mentor Bruce
Marsh who retired after last Sunday's races.
But SOTHISTHEONE was not part of Marsh's string he inherited but came over
from another trainer after failing to score in 18 starts, although he was
placed six times.
Ridden by A'Isisuhairi Kassim, the four-year-old defeated SPIRIT OF BIG BANG
by a short head with a similar distance to ST ALWYN.
One took a one-year
Horse Business Management at
Marcus Oldham College in Geelong, Australia in 2011 with a view to becoming
a horse trainer one day.
Upon graduation, Ong worked as a track rider in Melbourne
in 2012 and 2013 before returning to Singapore in 2013 to join New Zealand
trainer Mark Walker as a senior track rider and stable supervisor.
He later moved to
Alwyn Tan's stable before ending up with Marsh
in 2016.
