Back-at-best Truson win Selangor Gold Cup

In the past three seasons, TRUSON has always been in the mix in the big races with three wins and numerous placings to his name. The son of Al Maher won the Coronation Cup (1600m) in 2016, the Piala Emas Sultan Selangor (2000m) in 2017 and Perak Derby (2400m).

In May last year, TRUSON finished third to STICK SEEKER in the Selangor Gold Cup (1600m) and since then has not figured in the finish of a Cup race, although he has won subsequent five races including a hat-trick earlier this year.

But at eight years old, TRUSON was back at his very best when he came from some distance off the pace to win the Selangor Gold Cup at Sungei Besi here today.

It was in part thanks to a brilliant ride by Brazilian jockey Bernardo Pinheiro who has taken the local scene by storm since early last month.

Pinheiro had TRUSON well back of the leader in the running, sticking to the rails in the capacity 16-horse field. TRUSON worked his way to the front on the inside of horses at the 200m, the same time D'GREAT TIMING was making his bid on his outside.

The pair fought stride-for-stride to the post with TRUSON winning by three-quarter length. DAVINCI flashed home third.

TRUSON has now won 18 times in 61 starts stretching back to July 2014.

For Pinheiro, his stint thus far just gets better and better and he now has a Cup win to top it all.
