Hongchen scores runaway comeback win

Ten-year-old HONGCHEN showed that he has still plenty of fire left in him when he scored a runaway win in the Cosmo C set-weight over 1800m here today.

The veteran galloper was the least-backed in a field of six runners but he meant business when he took command at the start and was never headed again, although SING EXPRESS came within half a length of him making the turn into the straight.

But HONGCHEN, ridden by apprentice Hafis Saari, soon kicked away and went on to win by 4 3/4 lengths on the soft track.

HONGCHEN won seven races in Singapore but enjoyed a second lease on life in Malaysia when he landed double in March last year. He was placed several times after that but managed to end a run of nine unplaced outings in style today.

HONGCHEN was not the only "old-timer" to win today. There were also victories for 11-year-olds SUNNY and EMPIRE BAY, 10-year-old KEEN DRAGON and nine-year-old YOU ARE GENIUS.
