Trainer Cheng Han Yong gets early win

In just his second day on the scene, Penang-born trainer Cheng Han Yong quickly made his mark when he saddled PACIFIC MYSTICAL to victory in a Class 5 - 1400m handicap here today.

But it was not a maiden career success as he had sent out 20 winners after he was granted a public trainers' licence in New Zealand a few years ago.

Cheng started out as a track rider at the age of 16 with Cecil Robert and was apprenticed to Tan Joo Hock before be left for New Zealand to further his career.

He initially trained in partnership before setting up his own stables and in 2018 returned to work with Lim Hoon Seng and Tan Soo Beng before getting his MRA licence just last week.

PACIFIC MYSTICAL was having his first outing in Malaysia after chalking up three wins in 34 starts in Singapore.
