Inferno annihilates rivals in Lion City Cup

INFERNO stepped up on his first Group 1 win in the Singapore Guineas last month to put the best sprinters to shame in the Group 1 Lion City Cup at Kranji here today.

The Australian gelding was coming back in distance from 1600m to 1200m, and meeting his rivals in open company on level weights. But the four-year-old left them standing in the run to the post.

In his customary style, INFERNO settled well off the pace and Vlad Duric had the son of Holy Roman Emperor packed on the outside of horses turning for home.

INFERNO was the widest making the turn into the straight but once he got going, he swept to the front in a matter of strides and soon cleared away to win by 2 1/4 lengths. He clocked 1min 8.28secs.

"He’s quite something else, isn’t he?" said trainer Cliff Brown. "To come back from the mile to 1200m, it’s very hard to do, but he did a great job. This horse is just getting better and better."

"I’m very pleased. I’ll wait a while and decide what next, but to be honest, I’m not sure what is next for him."

INFERNO has now won eight of his nine starts and earned just over $900,000 in prizemoney.
