NEPEAN sprang a huge surprise to
capture the S$250,000 EW Barker Trophy (1400m) at Kranji here today, leading
all the way to win by one length.
The Roman Emperor gelding has have two starts since taking a break in
November last year but beat only one home and returned lame in his last
outing in September.
As such, the seven-year-old started at long odds ($276) in the Group 2
handicap today.
Nominated jockey Matthew Kellady was stood down after he became dehydrated
and Mohd Zaki seized the opportunity to land only his fourth win of the
season.
"This year has been so tough. I thought I’d give up
riding when I was stuck in Johor Bahru, I felt helpless I couldn’t do my
job," said Zaki who was among Malaysian jockeys who had to wait it out for
the easing of restrictions to get back to the saddle in Singapore.
"But even when I got back, it’s been very hard to get
rides, don’t even mention good rides."
Trainer Shane Baertschiger said: "This horse had surgery
to both fetlocks (chips removed) one year ago, and after his last run, he
pulled up very lame.
"We had him re-X-rayed and we found out he had arthritis
to his off-fore fetlock. He had two weeks off, just walking and we then
nursed him all the way to get into the EW Barker Trophy."
NEPEAN, who had a win at Randwick before coming to
Singapore, had not picked up five wins in 19 starts at Kranji.
