Not so Smart start for punters in 2020

The 2020 racing season in Malaysia got off to a shock start for punters when outsider MAT SMART scored in his Malaysian debut in the opening race here today.

The Australian gelding is by former Singapore champion 2YO and 3YO Gingerbread Man with 11 wins including the Singapore Guineas.

MAT SMART raced for a season (at three) in Western Australia, starting six times for a third and a fourth, and was ignored in the betting in the Maiden - 1400m handicap.

The four-year-old settled a long way back from the leaders headed by UNSHADOWED GENERAL who held on to his advantage until close to home.

MAT SMART, ridden by Daniel Jegadishan, was making up ground slowly and gradually on the leader in the home stretch and collared him close home to win by a neck. He paid RM155.
