Ocean Crossing lands upset win after spell

OCEAN CROSSING returned to racing after more than five months to create a big upset in the Class 3 - 1100m sprint on the polytrack at Kranji here today.

The All Too Hard gelding finished a respectable sixth (to TOP KNIGHT) in last year's delayed running of the Singapore Derby in August. Three weeks later, he triumphed in a Class 2 handicap over 1600m.

Three more runs followed including the Singapore Gold Cup last November in which he was unplaced.

Following the departure of his trainer Lee Freedman, OCEAN CROSSING was transferred to Michael Clements.

His maiden outing for Clements was supposed to a tune-up after his long break but he stunned his rivals with a come-from-behind win. He paid S$154.

"It was his first time on Polytrack, so it was a bit unexpected to see him win first-up, but we know he is a good horse who has run in a couple of Group races," said Clements. "We knew he would be outpaced early, but we did expect him to find the line as he did win some sprint races early."

OCEAN CROSSING has now six wins and six placings in 20 starts.
