Mr Malek is back in a winning role

Winner of six races last year, including five consecutively, MR MALEK is back in the winner's circle with a runaway win in the Class 2 - 1400m handicap at Kranji here today.

It was just his third outing of the season. After his unplaced run last January, he was subsequently found to be lame near-fore and spent some time on the sidelines during which he changed trainer to Steven Burridge.

Mr MALEK made his comeback in a Kranji Stakes A race over 1200m two weeks ago and he was clearly looking for a longer trip coming from a long way to finish third.

The Swiss Ace gelding, whose final win last year was at 1600m when tested over the mile for the first time, appreciated the longer distance today when he came from just off the pace in fourth spot to win drawing away by 2 1/2 lengths.

"The 1200m was too sharp for him at his last start, and today, 1400m was better," said Burridge. "The 1600m will be even better, and all going well, he should get the 1800m of the Derby. Things are going the right way for him."
