Black Thorn comes ripe for comeback win

BLACK THORN (name after a famous variety of durian) is ripe again after spending much of last year on the sidelines.

The Redwood gelding contested the Perak Derby during the corresponding meeting here last year, finishing a creditable fifth in the 2400m staying test. He did not race again until two months ago when he came home third in Supreme A race at over 1600m Sungei Besi.

M Ganeesh, who had scored twice on the gelding in 2018, renewed partnership with the now seven-year-old in a Enrich Stakes A event over 1200m here today.

Beaten for early speed, BLACK THORN settled well off the pace but Ganeesh managed to switch him out wide behind a wall of horses in front.

BLACK THORN then opened up quickly and went after the leaders headed by ANDADO. The two finished wide apart, with ANDADO next to the rails, but BLACK THORN got the verdict by half a length. It's his sixth win in 34 starts.

With yesterday's meeting vacated, the Perak Turf Club added three more races to today's programme. The ffirst three races scheduled for yesterday were staged as Race 10, 11 and 12 respectively.
