charging through the ranks

After going two years without
winning following his arrival in the country, CHINA CAPTAIN has been
steadily moving up the grades in the past six months and must be rated as
one of the top prospects in the circuit.
Just last November, the son of Rebel Raider broke through for his maiden win
in Class 5 followed by two more victories in Class 4 in his next three
starts. And now the five-year-old is taking on some of the best and beating
them.
Two months ago, CHINA CAPTAIN scored a runaway win in a Rapid Stakes event
over 1400m here in Penang. He then beat all but GRAND CROSS in an Enrich
Stakes sprint over 1200m in Ipoh two weeks ago. (GRAND CROSS is one of the
favourites in the Tunku Gold Cup at Sungei Besi tomorrow.)
The Australian gelding stepped up on that effort to record his fifth win in
his last nine outings in the Banded 62-89 set-weight contest over 1200m here
today.
Ridden by Yudanyl Aify who partnered him to his maiden two wins last
November, CHINA CAPTAIN came from midfield early to beat the front-running
RELAU STAR to win 1 1/2 lengths.
