Singapore Gold Cup

CYCLONE signalled his aspiration
for the Gold Cup next month with a convincing win in the Class 3 - 1400m
handicap at Kranji here today.
It came following a good first-up outing in Singapore in which he finished a
smack-up fifth over 1200m last month.
Ridden by Manoel Nunes, the son of Pierro settled in third spot and took a
dream run on the rails at the top of the straight to dash to the front. He
went on to win by half a length from QUARTER BACK with BOOMBA flashing home
third.
CYCLONE, who cost A$600,000 as a yearling, arrived in Singapore with a record of two wins (1400m and 1800m) and
several good placings, including a second in the listed Fernhill Mile at
Randwick, in Australia.
As a three-year-old, he also finished fourth in the Group 1 Randwick
Guineas.
"He got here two months later than we hoped. I had to
really try and chase fitness but not hurt the horse at the same time," said
trainer Tim Fitzsimmons.
"He puts me under a lot of pressure because he’s a really
quality horse. Today, he was probably 75 to 85% fit and he's got so much
improvement.
"He had a beautiful run. It’s just great for the owners.
This gives us a chance to get him into the Gold Cup now so hopefully, I can
get him fit enough for that race in a few weeks’ time.
"The longer the better. He’s an 1800m to 2000m horse."
"He’s a lovely horse and I believe he won on ability
today as he’s not 100% fit," said Nunes who rode a treble today. His other
two winners were SUPER SALUTE and STREET OF DREAMS.
