No Fun No Gain bags Penang Island Cup

NO FUN NO GAIN scored a huge upset in the RM150,000 Penang Island Cup over 1200m here today.

Traditionally, the Penang Turf Club runs the Yang Di Pertua Negeri Gold Cup (2000m) to mark the conclusion of the racing season in Malaysia. The Cup was not held on the last two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The club is not bringing back the race this year and instead is staging the Penang Island Cup for the first time.

Ridden by Harmeet Singh Gill, NO FUN NO GAIN dropped to the rear soon after the start and stayed in that position till the home turn. He dash through a gap between horses halfway down the straight and quickly went after WATCH THE THRONE who had taken the lead from the pacemaker AWESOME STORM.

NO FUN NO GAIN raced past the field with ease in the final 100m to win by 2 1/4 lengths. He paid RM94.

Winner of four races in Singapore in 2018 and 2019, the New Zealand gelding drew a blank in the last two years before moving to Malaysia early this year.

NO FUN NO GAIN won his first two starts here and after two more runs, finishing fourth both times, under Richard Lines he was transferred to Stephen Cook. Today's run was his first for the trainer.
