Katak lands first Kranji win

KATAK, unbeaten in five runs in his native South Africa, finally broke through for his first win in Singapore when he took out the Class 2 - 1400m handicap at Kranji here today.

The Potala Palace entire won three Group 3 races at Kenilworth before being shipped to Singapore where he contested three Group 1 races last year, finishing second to HARD TOO THINK in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup.

KATAK finished a creditable fourth to LIM'S LIGHTNING in the Singapore Gold Cup, resuming today against some strong opposition including the 2019 Gold Cup winner MR CLINT.

KATAK settled second in the 10-strong field before taking on the early leader NEPEAN turning into the home straight. He steadily surged ahead and was comfortable clear before HEARTENING FLYER flashed home to cut his winning margin to half a length.

"He has settled so much better. He wasn’t sweating, he was conserving his energy so well, when he used to use it up a lot before the race last time," said trainer Ricardo le Grange. "Mind you, he’s still not fully wound up, and that first race back will bring him on."

"I will now run him in a Class 1 race over the mile on February 26, and probably look for another race before the Kranji Mile, which is his main target."
