Coetzee captains Ipoh trainers clean sweep

Away from the main track of Sungei Besi, Kevin Coetzee seems to be the giant among the trainers when it comes racing at Ipoh — his home base — and Penang in recent times.

On a day Ipoh based trainers made a clean sweep of the seven races here today, Coetzee saddled four winners to be a clear third in the table with 17 winners. Richard Lines leads with 24 while Cheng Han Yong has 22.

Winless in Singapore, TAIWAN CAPTAIN opened accounts for Coetzee when he coasted to an easy win in the second race today for his fourth win in the country.

The trainer then had a 1-2 finish in a Class 4 - 1300m handicap with GEORGETOWN and DISCRETELY RED.

In the last quarter of 2022, the Darci Brahma gelding won three races in the space of four runs and it's his first win on 10 starts since. Winner of one race at Kranji, he has now picked up 10 wins in Malaysia.

Coetzee went on to saddle two more winners, JULIUS CAESAR (eighth win in MRA) and THAILAND CAPTAIN (maiden win in nine runs New Zealand and Malaysia).

There was also a second win for rookie trainer Mogana Selvan who sent out CAVALLA COURT to victory in a Class 4 - 1300m handicap.

The New Zealand managed one win in 22 runs in Singapore but has not scored twice in six starts in Malaysia.
