Ferreira starts Malaysian stint with a win

Former Kranji trainer Teo Kieser paid a modest A$10,000 for him as a yearling and named him SUPER DRAGON.

But the Australian gelding failed to show in 10 starts for the trainer and he was sent over to Malaysia where he quickly found winning form with two wins in his first four starts.

SUPER DRAGON has changed trainer four times since but continued to earn his keep, even now as a nine-year-old.

His last win was more than a year ago, with a couple of showings since.

But with jockey Edson Ferreira astride, SUPER DRAGON was back in the winner's circle, upsetting the odds-on favourite WHITE RABBIT to win the final event on the card at Sungei Besi here today, a Class 5 - 1250m handicap.

WHITE RABBIT was the first to break but Ferreira quickly took up the running on the gelding. CAORUNN settled in second spot ahead of WHTE RABBIT.

CAORUNN ranged alongside SUPER DRAGON at the top of the straight and was momentarily in front at one stage. But SUPER DRAGON fought back and kicked away passing the 200m. He went on to win by 1 1/4 lengths.

WHITE RABBIT came on strongly in the closing stages to beat CAORUNN for second placing.

SUPER DRAGON has now won seven times in 68 starts.

"I am happy to ride a winner on my first day here," said Ferreira, 38, who has more than 270 winners to his name.

"I am thankful to the Selangor Turf Club for allowing me to ride here. The track is beautiful and I have been treated well by all the people I meet. I hope to ride many more winners."

"He rode a good race," said AB Abdullah who trains SUPER DRAGON.

"Ferreira went to the front and slowed down the pace. He only used up the horse in the final 200m. I am happy for him. It was a good start."

Besides Brazil, Ferreira has also ridden by the UAE circuit for a few years.
