Kharisma in Rocket Man Sprint

Second to MR MALEK in the Group 3 Kranji Sprint (1200m)
three starts back, KHARISMA landed his first group win when he battled to
victory in the Group 3 Rocket Man Sprint over 1200m at Kranji here today.
KHARISMA has had some decent showings in the group races in the past,
including a third to MR MALEK in the 2021 Stewards' Cup (1600m).
The Mossman gelding finished a close fifth to PACIFIC EMPEROR in a Class 2
handicap over 1400m two weeks ago but the table was turned this time around
over the shorter trip today.
Jockey Shafrizal Saleh had the seven-year-old parked sixth on the rails in
the 12-strong field but managed to creep close to the front-running FAME
STAR making the turn into the straight.
THE AUGUST was the first to challenge FAME STAR at the top of the straight
with KHARISMA looking for a run between them. THE AUGUST and KHARISMA raced
past a tiring FAME STAR at the 200m to fight it out.
KHARISMA beat off THE AUGUST close home and just then PACIFIC EMPEROR
flashed home on the outside to make it a thrilling finish. KHARISMA held on
to win by a neck. THE AUGUST was third.
"He might not be the best horse out there but he was
really fit and was given a beautiful ride by Shafrizal. He’s a happy horse,"
said trainer Stephen Gray.
"I’m very happy," said Shafrizal, whose first Group race
win came on STARLIGHT in the Group 2 Singapore Three-Year-Old Classic
(1400m) two years ago.
"My horse travelled really well. He just waited for my
instructions and when I got a clear run in the home straight, he just went
‘whoosh’."
