Mr Malek back at best in Kranji Sprint

MR MALEK notched his second group win in three years when he fought his way to an narrow win in the Kranji Sprint, which has not been held since 2016, at Kranji here today.

MR MALEK won the Group 2 Stewards' Cup in 2021 and since then has been mixing up with the best both in sprints and staying races.

The New Zealand gelding finished third to LIM'S LIGHTNING in the Gold Cup in 2021, third to the same horse in the Kranji Mile the following year and third to LIM'S KOSCIUSZKO in the Kranji Mile last month.

Up against five rivals after the late scratching of two runners in the 1200m sprint today, MR MALEK settled fourth on the rails. A gap opened up nicely approaching the 300m when the front horses drifted out.

MR MALEK had to dig deep but in the end, the managed to surge home close to home to win in a head with KARISMA flashing home second.

It's the ninth win in 30 starts for MR MALEK who made his debut in 2019. His victory also ended a drought in group races for his trainer Steven Burridge whose last success was the Steward's Cup in 2021.
