Red Ocean sweeps to surprise win

RED OCEAN returned after a four-month break to cause a big upset in the Class 2 sprint over 1100m on the polytrack at Kranji here today.

When the Ocean Park gelding last raced in a Class 3 - 1400m handicap last October, he finished last after setting the early pace and was subsequently to be lame near-fore.

Entered for the Class 2 today, RED OCEAN enjoyed a big drop in the weight and with apprentice Rozlan Nazam claiming 4kg, the five-year-old carried just 46kg.

Going on his last-start showing and given the fact his previous four wins had been over 1400m and 1600m on the turf, RED OCEAN started a long odds.

But RED OCEAN surprised many when he raced well up with the pace and despite racing wide from the start to the straight, he had enough to battle to a 3/4-length win. He paid $120.

"He (RED OCEAN) trialled like a bomb the other week," said trainer Shane Baertschiger.

"We always thought that he (RED OCEAN) would go well. It was just a matter of whether he could lead or race on the pace as he seemed to prefer it that way."

"It’s great to know that he (RED OCEAN) doesn’t have to lead to win. Obviously, now he has shown that he can win on the Polytrack, we have plenty of options going forward."
