Pinheiro celebrates birthday with double

Bernardo Pinheiro celebrated turning 27 yesterday with a double astride BABY TWINS and SOUSUI at Kranji here today, bringing his tally to six since returning to ride in Singapore four weeks ago.

BABY TWINS had a win and a third in three runs in England before coming to Singapore. A first-up fourth at Kranji was followed by a sixth placing in the Group 3 Three-Year-Old Sprint last month.

With the two runs under his belt, BABY TWINS proved too speedy his rivals in the Class 4 - 1000m sprint on the polytrack, leading from start to finish to win by 1 1/2 lengths.

SOUSUI picked up his maiden win when he dropped to Class 5 last January and was placed twice in Class 4 since before taking out the 1400m handicap today.

Pinheiro tracked pacemaker SUMMER WIND on settling down and took a while for him to overhaul the leader in the home straight. After taking over the lead, he was incline to lay out. But his rider managed to nurse him to the line to win by half a length from the fast-finishing CITIZEN.

It was the first time the Brazilian has ridden a winner for trainer Hideyuki Takaoka.

"Mr Takaoka gave me rides last year and I was very grateful," he said.

"While I placed on some, we never won a race together, so it was really nice to ride a winner for him. He gave me good advice on this horse too. He told me what I had to do to win."
