Renzo pays big dividend in hattrick win

In a battle of two horses both gunning for a hattrick, RENZO humbled the odds-on favourite LORD'S COMMAND in the Class 3 - 1000m sprint on the polytrack at Kranji here today.

LORD'S COMMAND started the race unbeaten in two runs in Singapore, after registering seven placings in 12 runs at two and three in Australia, including a second in the Group 2 Todman Stakes at Randwick.

RENZO, meanwhile, returned to winning after 16 months to win last month and again early this month in Class 4.

Despite his good recent form, the Argentinean gelding started at long odds ($103).

Ridden by Vlad Duric, RENZO settled nicely behind the pace with a wall of horse going for the early lead. He then eased the five-year-old out behind the heels of LORD'S COMMAND in the straight and when the latter shot to the front inside the final 200m, RENZO was in a challenging position.

RENZO proved too good for LORD'S COMMAND in the run home to win by three quarters of a length.

"I will be honest, until three starts ago, I think we were riding this horse (RENZO) all wrong," said trainer Ricardo Le Grange.

"When he won (August 6) after being held up in the straight, (jockey) Bernardo (Pinheiro) said to me that he thought we had been riding him too handy.

"Vlad said the same thing when he won at his next start (September 9), so the change in tactics has been by default.

"So I looked at the race programme and thought this Class 3 sprint would suit him as he should get a sit given the expected pace. After drawing gate nine, Vlad said it could work out perfectly - and it did."
