Super Salute lands
first group win for trainer

SUPER SALUTE captured the S$150,000
EW Barker Trophy at Kranji here today to stretch his winning run to six
consecutive wins and handed his trainer Jason Lim with his first group win.
Twice Group 3-placed in Australia, the son of I Am Invincible has made
tremendous progress since finishing fourth in his Singapore debut last
September. A double in Class 4 was followed a win in Class 3, then another
double in Class 2 leading up to today's Group 2 contest.
The first elect in the betting were GOLDEN MONKEY and SUPER SALUTE and they
turned the 1400m handicap into a two-horse race in the final stretch.
MR BLACK BACK set a brisk pace with GOLDEN MONKEY and SUPER SALUTE trailling
in third and fourth spot early. The pair raced up to the leader at the top
of the straight and raced away from the 250m to fight out the finish.
SUPER SALUTE, who raced three-wide till the straight, found something extra
in the closing stages to win by 1 3/4 lengths.
"It’s my first Group race (win) and I’m just overly
excited and I don’t know what to say," said Lim after the race.
"In the straight – when he (SUPER SALUTE) kicked clear of
GOLDEN MONKEY, I was still ‘shivering’ and I just hoped that he would hang
on (till the end)."
"I’m very glad to have jumped on this horse," said
Brazilian jockey Manoel Nunes who rode the gelding in five of his six wins.
"He’s a really good horse and a special one."
SUPER SALUTE will now be set for the 4YO series which was
always the plan set for him.
