Sparkling start for new trainer Selvan

Newly-licensed trainer Mogana Selvan a/l S Ramiah made a winning start to his new career when QIJI DIAMOND, one of his first two runners, saluted the judges in the Banded 51-74 set-weight race here today.

In his first day on the job, the former jockey-turned-trainer had two runners in the first event he was engaged in and found the sparkle he needs in QIJI DIAMOND.

The Kuroshio gelding came over from Singapore where he won once in 16 starts and had won twice in nine runs in Malaysia prior to his recent transfer to Selvan.

Ridden by Khairil Izuan Zulkiflee, QIJI DIAMOND settled nicely behind the pace set by MR ALEJANDRO and VIETNAM CAPTAIN. FINAL TOUCH surged to the front at the top of the straight and drew clear at the 200m.

QIJI DIAMOND then went after the new leader and in a matter of a few strides 100m out, shot the front and won comfortably by two lengths.

It has been 17 years since Selvan hang up his boots, having last ridden competitively in 2006. Since then, he has been a track rider, stable supervisor and assistant trainer before getting his big break this year.

Selvan ended his first day on the job with a win and two seconds from his seven runners.
