Shimi Go heading for more glory

SHIMI GO is a horse very much in a hurry.

Landing in Malaysia as a maiden, the New Zealand gelding is not only unbeaten in three starts but has defied a big jump in class to capture the Sungai Besi Autoworld Cup at Sungei Besi here today.

The son of Burgundy came a modest record of two placings in seven starts at three and four back home but quickly showed his true potential with a runaway in a Open Maiden race last September.

A month later, the five-year-old again easily accounted for his Open Novice rivals which prompted his trainer Cheng Han Yong to nominate him for the Metro A set-weight event over 1200m today.

SHIMI GO was up against champion sprinter AWESOME STORM (who started favourite) and established gallopers like WHITE HOOF BIRD and CHINESE TEA.

But SHIMI GO proved more than a match for them.

After settling in second spot, SHIMI Go went on to win easily by 1 1/4 lengths from WHITE HOOF BIRD with the pacemaker TITAN PEGASUS holding on for third place.

"The trainer's instructions were to settle in third or fourth spot but he we found ourselves running second easily," said Jackson Low. "From there everything went well for us. It was an impressive win against a very strong field."

"He (SHIMI GO) was supposed to run two weeks ago but sustained a minor injury. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise," said Cheng.

"He's made tremendous progress since his last two runs and won decisively today. Bigger things to come for him.

"I have been lucky with New Zealand horses and I have to thank the agent who has been picking up the right horses for me and the owner who has supported me in buying new horses."

Note: Jockey Low unfortunately sustained a fracture at C7 vertebrae when he fell from MAGNITUDE in Race 8.
