JERAM NEW VILLAGE, winner of the RM1m Astro Wah Lai Toi Sprint Trophy last time out, completed a big race double when he scored a fighting win in the RM250,000 Astro Wah Lai Toi Vase over 1400m here today. Ridden again by Sofhan Latif, the six-year-old chestnut New Zealand gelding by Faltaat out of the Westminster mare Encarta was handy throughout and was within striking distance of the leader LABU LABU at the home turn. But while LABU LABU kicked clear at the 200m chased by RUNNING FLAME, JERAM NEW VILLAGE struggled to keep pace and looked beaten. However, Sofhan rallied JERAM NEW VILLAGE for another effort in the final 80m and his mount responded, just as GOLDEN ACE also made a late bid. But JERAM NEW VILLAGE proved a shade too good for GOLDEN ACE (5 ch.a.g Desert Prince - Soyinca by Caerleon) to give trainer Frank Maynard a splendid hattrick for the day. Earlier, JERAM ROSE (4 b.a.m Lomond Bay - Aspen Rose by Centaine) won the Class 4, Premier - 1300m sprint to give Maynard’s new apprentice Tai Lee Leong his maiden success in Malaysia. Following that, JERAM SPECIAL won the RM225,000 SLTC Juvenile Million Challenge (2nd Leg) over 1600m. |
