Mark Ewe fails in appeal, ousted one year

SINGAPORE:  May 2, 2012

Jockey Mark Ewe has failed in his appeal against a one-year disqualification for his ride on ABYSS in a Class 5 - 1100m sprint on the polytrack at Kranji on Apr 20, 2012.

ABYSS, trained by Brian Dean, came from last early to finish fifth to CONQUEROR.

Ewe was on May 20 found guilty to a charge under MRA Rule 44(8) for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to obtain the best possible placing.

Jockey Ewe subsequently exercised his right of appeal against the decision of the Stipendiary Stewards and the penalty imposed on him and granted a stay of sentence.

The Race Meeting Stewards’ heard his appeal today.

After considering all of the evidence together with submissions from Ewe, his legal counsel and the chairman of the inquiry panel, the Race Meeting Stewards dismissed the appeal. The penalty was confirmed and Ewe was disqualified for a period of one year with immediate effect from today to Friday, June 21, 2013. His deposit was forfeited.
