South African jockey Derreck David, who made his Singapore debut with a first-up win on POSEIDON last Friday, ended his shortened stint with a winner astride ARES here tonight.

Despite winning his last two starts, the Irish gelding was sent off at generous odds in the Benchmark 83 - 1600m handicap probably because he was facing his biggest test yet in the evening's main event.

David had the four-year-old settled in midfield early before bringing him wide out for his run at the home bend, then had to work hard to fight off the late run of SQUIRS OSBALDESTON, with a bunch of horses right behind them at the line. ARES won his a neck.

ARES, was sold for 75,000 guineas after having registered a second in his debut, then winning his only other start as a juvenile in England. He then headed for Singapore and was placed four times last year before his last three starts this season.

"I’m in talks to maybe come back and ride Poseidon for them in the Singapore Four-Year-Old Challenge and the filly Athena in the two-year-old race. It would be a great opportunity but I would also like to come back here for a longer period," said David.

Vlad Duric, meanwhile, notched his third treble in as many weeks with wins on newcomer REDDOT RISING, NEWLANDS and KATAGAS.

For NEWLANDS, it was his third win in eight starts and KATAGAS his second in eight.
