Cheng wins first trophy with Shanghai Nights

Trainer Cheng Han Yong, who obtained his MRA licence back in July, earned his first trophy when SHANGHAI NIGHTS came from a long way back early to snatch victory in the RM45,000 Sungei Besi Autoworld Cup at Sungei Besi here today.

Despite winning his last three starts, the New Zealand five-year-old was only third in the betting in the combined Classes 2 & 3 race over 1400m, behind equal favourites TIME TO HARVEST and ALJAWHRA.

Apprentice Laercio de Souza, riding SHANGHAI NIGHTS for the first time, had the Ferlax entire well back early but worked his way up the field but was still well off the pace at the top of the straight.

ALJAWHRA hit the front momentarily at the 300m but failed to run on. SHANGHAI NIGHT stakes his claim soon after and hit the front 150m out. TIME TO HARVEST flew in the closing stages but it was too late.

SHANGHAI NIGHTS is now unbeaten by four starts since joining the stable of Cheng, bringing his record to six wins in 17 starts.
